Kua Number (also spelled Gua Number) is a concept from Feng Shui, not traditional numerology. It originates from Chinese metaphysics, particularly the Eight Mansions School of Feng Shui, and is used to determine a person’s lucky and unlucky directions based on their birth year and gender.
The Kua Number is a personal number (1 to 9) calculated using:
Your year of birth
Your gender
Once calculated, this number is used to determine:
Favorable directions (for sleep, work, home entrances, etc.)
Unfavorable directions (to be avoided)
For Males:
Add the last two digits of your birth year.
If the sum is a 2-digit number, add them again to get a single digit.
Subtract this single digit from 10.
Example: Born in 1993 → 9+3 = 12 → 1+2 = 3 → 10–3 = 7
For Females:
Add the last two digits of your birth year.
Reduce to a single digit if necessary.
Add 5 to the result (for births after 2000, add 6).
Example: Born in 1993 → 9+3 = 12 → 1+2 = 3 → 3+5 = 8
Note: For people born in 2000 or later, the formula slightly changes.
Each Kua Number belongs to either the East Group or West Group.
East Group Kua Numbers: 1, 3, 4, 9
Best directions: North, South, East, Southeast
West Group Kua Numbers: 2, 5 (female), 6, 7, 8
